Let there be sound

In seven days, God created the world. First, he swirled the elements together; we hear this in shockingly in the ‘Story of Creation’ by the irreverent Frenchman Jean-Féry Rebel – written in 1737.
In 2008 the English composer Thomas Adès, born in 1971, who’s person is all to familar to RSB audiences, went through the entire ‘creation of the world’ in just 30 minutes. The ‘seven-day’ piano concerto in question does not skimp on mischievous and ironic musical commentary on God’s majestic reign. A good quarter of a century earlier, John Adams – now also a highly esteemed contemporary composer in this country – wove a pulsating tapestry of sound for large choir and orchestra from a single note. In “Harmonium”, based on poems by John Donne and Emily Dickinson, Adams infuses American minimalism with late Romantic sounds.
