Sing, rejoice, resound, glee!

Music by Handel and Bach provides the perfect introduction to the Advent season. Three Concerti grossi by George Frideric Handel – these have not been on the RSB programme for a very long time. They used to feature on the programme almost regularly. Afterwards, many modern symphony orchestras steered clear of this repertoire for decades, leaving the field to specialist early music ensembles. Nowadays, historically informed performance practice allows even modern orchestras to present Handel, Bach or Telemann convincingly, with a visible and audible delight for and in the Baroque sounds. Soprano soloist Anna Prohaska graces the festive yet heartfelt vocal parts from four of Handel’s oratorios with her exquisite art of interpretation, just as she does with Bach’s cantata, which remains soberingly relevant to this day: ‘Falsche Welt, Dir trau ich nicht’.
