Silence releases eternity

No emphasis whatsoever, just listening to what’s inside: this is what makes “Stille und Umkehr“, the last orchestral work by Bernd Alois Zimmermann, which he composed in 1970, four months before choosing to take his own life. This frugal work features a number of unusual instruments, such as the dulcimer, the accordion and the singing saw. It revolves around the central note ‘D’. It is precisely from this ‘D’ that Anton Bruckner’s final symphony arises, the monumental Ninth, whose finale Bruckner was unable to complete. This Austrian symphonist’s final reach for the stars ends with the third movement. This Adagio, which lasts almost half an hour, appears to open a resonant window into eternity. We may listen in wonder, for a fleeting precious moment.
