It’s summer!

Maurice Ravel’s declaration of love to Spain forms the luminous first half of the evening. Following the French composer’s passionate tribute to his adopted homeland – Ravel’s mother came from the Basque Country – we can look forward to the lively, jazz-infused Piano Concerto in G minor, performed by the 31-year-old Japanese superstar Hayato Sumino as soloist. The celebrated Japanese pianist also has plenty to do in Leonard Bernstein’s symphonic quest for a redeeming father figure, for the ‘colossal Dad’. Bernstein, who identified with Wystan H. Auden’s poem ‘In the Age of Anxiety’ in 1948, arrived at a startling realisation in 1977: “… it turns out that the goal (a pure, diatonic trumpet motif) lies, as it were, right on one’s doorstep, where one least expects to find it, for instance in this glass of orange juice I’m holding here. This is God in the orange juice, for in it there is sunshine, the earth, vitamins. And that is all.”
