Longing for beauty

Born in Canada in 1984 and now living in Berlin, Samy Moussa belongs to the increasingly prominent post-avantgarde generation, which no longer finds any appeal in denouncing the world’s ills through sombre tones. For the orchestral anthem “Adgilis Deda” (Hometown), he drew inspiration from the Georgian Caucasus Mountains; the music follows the “concept of protection” (Moussa) and a sense of comfort. The delicate timbres of the harp are what repeatedly inspired Kaija Saariaho to compose for this special instrument. One of the world’s leading harpists presents the three-movement harp concerto from 2015. Following the spectacular Fifth, Shostakovich’s Sixth (1939) seeks meaning and hope through far more poetic means. In the end, it has no choice but to behave like a clown in a circus – with desperate grimace.
