Like a fairy tale

In 1898, Edward Elgar drew charming tone portraits of his friends, full of British humor: The orchestral variations with the truly enigmatic title “Enigma”. One might wonder: did the somewhat clumsy violist and the heavy-handed pianist recognize themselves?

In 1915, Karol Szymanowski wrote the beguiling Songs of a Fairy Tale Princess, delicately spun around the poetry of his sister Zofia, which were inspired by works from the middle east. In 1933, Szymanowski set three of these songs for soprano and orchestra. Now Iwona Sobotka will perform those original arrangements as wel as the premiere of the orchestral version of the remaining three songs by Bruno Dozza.

While Karol Szymanowski was able to retreat into fantastic inner dream worlds during the time of the First World War, Maurice Ravel fortunately managed to do so as early as 1910 (after the war, nothing was the same for Ravel). The five little fairy tale pictures of “Ma mère l’oye” are positively amazing, their enchanting sound announces the ineffable pure knowledge to which only childlike naivety has access.
