The meaning of crises

“Always play as if your life depended on it” (György Kurtág), even if it is a simple C major scale as at the beginning of “… quasi una fantasia”. Reminiscences of Beethoven and Schumann, meditative silence, violent eruptions – pianist Leif Ove Andsnes is fascinated by the “surreal sound event” that Kurtág makes appear within ten minutes with various groups of instruments distributed around the room. Against this backdrop, the incomprehensible wonder of Mozart’s D minor Piano Concerto can literally unfold anew. After the interval, 36-year-old conductor Petr Popelka, with the RSB for the first time, floods the hall with epic expansiveness. In the midst of the hectic world tumult of 1907, Rachmaninoff overcame the greatest crisis of meaning in his life with Symphony No. 2 – inviting us of later birth to reflect on ourselves.
