Frank Strobel - Conductor
Frank Strobel, who believes in transcending perceived divisions between artistic genres, is renowned as a conductor, arranger, editor, producer and studio musician. He has been active for many years in the space where films meet music and is a leading figure in the field of film in concert. He has taken silent movies into opera houses and concert halls and is also admired as a conductor of concert repertoire of the Classical and Romantic eras and the 20th century.
Strobel grew up in the surroundings of his parents’ cinema in Munich and got fascinated by the marriage of image and music. As a 16-year-old he obtained a piano score of Gottfried Huppertz‘s original music for Fritz Lang’s cinematic masterpiece “Metropolis”, which he rearranged and then played to accompany the film. The final arrangement of “Metropolis” has again played a determining role in Strobel’s career after an original copy of the film was discovered in 2008 in Buenos Aires. The much-anticipated premiere of the restored version of Metropolis took place at the 2010 Berlin International Film Festival with Strobel conducting the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra.
Strobel is also in demand internationally for performances of music by the late-Romantic composers Franz Schreker, Alexander von Zemlinsky and Siegfried Wagner, whose works he has both revived and premiered. His open-minded musical philosophy struck a chord with the great Russian-born composer Alfred Schnittke, who came to see Strobel as an ideal interpreter of his works and commissioned him to make concert suites from a selection of his film scores; this led to recordings with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, which in 2005 and 2006 received the Deutscher Schallplattenpreis. Strobel also reconstructed and published Prokofiev’s score for Eisenstein’s “Alexander Nevsky”, conducting the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra in the world premiere of his edition at Konzerthaus Berlin in 2004; this was followed by a performance at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre. In 2006, at Dresden’s Semperoper Strobel conducted the Sächsische Staatskapelle for a screening of Robert Wiene‘s 1925 film of “Der Rosenkavalier”, with the reconstructed Strauss’ original orchestral score. A much more recent film, the science fiction extravaganza “The Matrix” was screened at London’s Royal Albert Hall in 2011, with Don Davis‘ score performed live by Frank Strobel and the NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover. 2014 brought the commemoration of the outbreak of World War I with the world premiere at the Salle Pleyel in Paris of Philippe Schoeller’s newly-written score for Abel Gance’s 1919 film, “J’accuse”; Frank Strobel conducted the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. In 2016 Frank Strobel realised the reconstructed film “Iwan Grozny” by Sergei Eisenstein, for the first time performed with the complete music in its’ original orchestration by Sergei Prokofiev with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin (RSB) at the Musikfest Berlin, followed by a performance with Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna in 2017.
Frank Strobel enjoys close and long lasting relationships with the Finnish and Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestras, the Gothenburg Symphony, the London Symphony Orchestra, the MDR Sinfonieorchester Leipzig, the NDR Radio Philharmonic Hannover, the Orchestre National de Lyon, the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin and the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich; with the Cologne and Paris Philharmonie as well as the Vienna Konzerthaus.
In the 2018/2019 season, Frank Strobel conducted the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin for the reconstructed and restored version of the silent film “J’accuse” (director: Abel Gance), which premiered in 2014 – the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War I – with the newly composed music by Philippe Schoeller in the Salle Pleyel in Paris. This is the first part of an Abel Gance series during the Berlin Music Festival, which is continued in the 2019/2020 season with the silent film epic “La Roue” (with the original compilation of works by French composers from 1880 to 1920).
Other highlights of the 2018/2019 season included a tribute to the legendary duo Fellini-Rota and the traditional conducting of the film music competition as part of the Zurich Film Festival with the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich – the close collaboration with the Tonhalle Orchestra will continue the following season with three further projects. In the year of the Bernstein celebrations, Frank Strobel conducted the German premiere of the film concert “On the Waterfront” at the Komische Oper Berlin with the original music of the jubilarian.
Frank Strobel acts as an adviser to ZDF/arte for its silent film programming. In 2000, he co-founded with Beate Warkentien the EUROPEAN FILMPHILHARMONIC INSTITUTE. This cultural institution has built a reputation for its expertise in authentic performances of film scores.

It is possible to buy your tickets online at www.rsb-online.de , by telephone, email or in person at our visitor service, or at the daytime or evening box office. Book your tickets until the last working day before the respective concert on our homepage and simply print them out at home in A4-format. Payment is by credit card; a processing fee of 2 € will be charged. This possibility is available for concerts in the Konzerthaus Berlin and the Philharmonie Berlin. All theatre box offices, travel agents and advance ticket sales offices in Berlin and Brandenburg affiliated to “eventim” also sell tickets for concerts by the RSB. The customary advance ticket fees and, where relevant, costs for postage will be charged. The evening box office opens one hour before the concert starts on the day of the concert. If an introductory event is taking place before the concert, the evening box office will open 90 minutes before the concert begins.
Special group rates are available for school pupils and travel groups, companies, societies and major customers. Please contact our visitor service directly if you are interested.
School pupils, trainees and students up to the age of 27, as well as the unemployed, can buy tickets for the RSB's own concerts for 10 € each at the evening box office before the respective concert. This offer applies only when tickets are still available. The organisers take responsibility for the disposition of the tickets. Reductions can be granted only when buying tickets personally and presenting the corresponding documents and personal identification. No more than one reduced ticket per person may be purchased. This ticket is non-transferrable. Severely disabled persons entitled to an escort can address their request for tickets to the visitor service. Please also use parking possibilities in the Sony Center (entrances Ben-Gurion- and Bellevuestraße) as well as Potsdamer Platz Arkaden (entrance to underground parking on Reichpietschufer) and in the car park on Schöneberger Ufer. All these are public parking areas belonging to the City of Berlin, on behalf of which they are administrated by APCOA Autoparking GmbH.
The public parking areas on Herbert-von-Karajan-Straße (on the western side of the Philharmonie) provide a limited number of identified parking spaces for the disabled. Unfortunately, it is generally not possible to reserve parking spaces.
The building opens one hour before the start of concerts.
As the Berlin Philharmonic Hall is a listed building, unfortunately it is not fully accessible in all areas. Further information regarding entrances for the disabled, places in the disabled box, and offers of help for the sight and hearing impaired are available on the website of the Philharmonie.
Concert visitors with severely disabled passes marked B will receive a free ticket for their escort when buying a ticket. Our visitor service (link) is happy to assist with any further questions. On site, you can contact the staff of the events service EVENTTEAM, who will be happy to help you in any way.
Please note that visitors may not take large bags, rucksacks or coats into the concert hall with them. However, coats can be handed in, free of charge at the cloakrooms in the foyer or on the first floor opposite Block A right. Please collect your coats and items of luggage as soon as possible after the end of the concert. Personal items which are not collected in good time will be left with the porter at the stage door (in the direction of Potsdamer Platz) and can be collected from there upon presentation of your cloakroom ticket.
There is no fixed dress code for concerts by the RSB. Depending on your taste and how you feel most comfortable, you can attend in suit or evening gown, or in jeans and a T-shirt, for example.
Snacks and drinks are sold in the foyer of the Philharmonie before concerts and in the concert intervals. These can be ordered in advance for the opening of doors and the interval, please ring tel. 030 265 15 24 or via email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
No food or drink may be taken into the concert hall.
Symphonic and chamber music concerts generally take 2 hours including a 20-minute interval.
Attention is drawn to significant deviations from this rule in the concert calendar.
Steffen Georgi, dramaturge of the RSB, offers free introductory talks to most symphonic concerts in the auxiliary rooms of the Konzerthaus or the Philharmonie. These take place 50 minutes (in the Philharmonie) or 60 minutes (in the Konzerthaus) before the start of the concert. The introductory talks will take place in German language. All relevant details may be found in our annotated concert calendar; see entries on respective concert dates.
Should you arrive too late for a concert, it will depend on the works being played when and whether there will be late admissions. Please speak to the staff of the respective venue. It may not be possible for you to take up your actual seat until the concert interval, as the music cannot be disturbed. No refund on ticket prices is possible.
Our programmes are sold by the admission stewards before each concert and in the interval, costing 3 € each.
