Schoolkids in concert

The project “Schoolkids in concert” has existed in Berlin since 1999, and now a consistent number of more than 3,000 pupils and teachers participate each year. SIK integrates the active musical life of the capital into music teaching, while also generating a young audience with the future in mind. In cooperation with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin and project organizer Anke Hopfengart, music teachers are given the opportunity to attend selected concerts in the city's major concert venues together with their classes and advanced level students. Tickets cost only 5 € per participant. In addition, basic, comprehensive lesson materials are provided free of charge. Teachers can use these to prepare for the concert visits and thus incorporate the works thematically into their teaching plan. The teaching materials also provide many music teachers themselves with a medium of further education. As from the 2016/2017 season, the project “Schoolkids in concert” will be offering an additional opportunity to invite members of the orchestra into school lessons in the run-up to a concert visit. They will explain the works from their standpoint, on site, and also give pupils an insight into the work of professional musicians. The visit will take place after prior discussion and agreement between musician and teacher. This project is helping to facilitate young people's personal access to music, while teachers receive support with preparing their pupils for the concert evening and stimulating their enthusiasm for the concert experience.
