School Projects with the RSB

The RSB is very open to children’s and young people’s curiosity. In the context of workshops, rehearsal visits, and school, children’s and family concerts, they can become acquainted with the music and instruments of a modern symphony orchestra.

Rehearsal Visits to the RSB
“So what do musicians do in the daytime?” This question is posed by a number of people who are not familiar with the content of a professional musician’s life and only perceive his concert work. But there is a great deal of concentrated preparation work behind any ensemble’s public appearances. In order to get some sense of what it means to develop a perfect concert sound with more than 90 musicians in different instrumental groups and to see what tasks the conductor faces, school groups may visit the orchestra’s rehearsals upon prior arrangement with the RSB’s schools representative.

Exchanging the classroom for the broadcasting hall at Haus des Rundfunks may be prepared in an information session as part of traditional (music) lessons, or upon request by a member of the orchestra who will visit the classroom. The musician joins the class either once or a number of times and helps the children to get to know the orchestra’s work better in a number of creative improvisation games. He or she will tell the children about rehearsal and concert experiences, answer questions, and present various instruments that the young people can also try out.

Partnership with Schools
In the past the RSB has cooperated with a range of schools. Since 2011, it has been participating in the programme “KÜNSTE & SCHULE – Partnerschaften für Berlin” run by the “Kulturprojekte Berlin GmbH”. This programme involves building up a binding, close and long-term cooperation between a cultural institution and a specific school.

The RSB’s partner is the Konrad Aghad School in Neukölln. The introductory-phase projects have been completed and in future the pupils will become more and more involved in practical music making. In December 2012 the first step towards this was taken, with the development and musical and dramatic performance of episodes from Igor Stravinsky’s “Firebird” ballet together with 5th and 6th year classes. In addition, there are plans for instrumental workshops and the realisation of further concerts and dramatic projects. Schools interested in collaboration with the RSB are welcome to contact Rudolf Döbler, the orchestra’s schools representative, at any time.

If you are interested, please contact us. Together we will develop a project especially for your school, based on your requirements and competencies, and our possibilities.
